It is inside the weatherstripped area, so road dirt won't get in there, although passengers could accidentally kick sand in there. The manual also says to use white lithium grease. That little black x next to C is the inside part of the handle that sticks into the door and is where you can insert your tool. You might have to break the handle off though.
